CLASS OF 2006
Personal Trainer and Campaigner
Since leaving Belfast High School, I pursued my interest in film and studied Media Studies at college which led me to work on Game of Thrones. Working in media was something I really enjoyed but the long hours and unpredictable schedules unfortunately didn’t work well with my Cystic Fibrosis.
Putting my health first, I moved into another passion in my life: health and fitness. I’ve coached many clients throughout the years, and have now moved totally online where I get to help people from all around the world. I have also been able to put my media skills to good use through my social media, where I hope to make health and fitness accessible for many more and inspire those with the same lifelong illness by sharing my personal journey. This also led me to take part in a few physical challenges, one of which was filmed by Channel 4.
A joy of my job is the opportunity to educate those who are struggling with their health in order to make their life easier and to feel fitter, healthier and happier. A challenge that feeds into this is having to adapt my skills in teaching and educating for each individual client, as it’s important to remember that everyone can process information differently.
Reflecting on my school experience, I would say that the most important thing to remember is that everyone learns differently, so find out what works best for you. Also remember that this is a short time in your life, so make the most of being surrounded by friends and do as many activities as you can to find out what you enjoy. My best memory was taking part in athletics and representing the school in the 100m relay in districts and Ulsters.
My message to prospective students would be to embrace the unknown and don’t worry if you fail sometimes — that’s how you will learn and grow.
