We would like to congratulate former pupil, Bev Craig OBE, on her election as Mayor of Greater Manchester. The Labour candidate claimed victory after securing 309,525 votes over Reform's Sian Astley who won 157,178.
Bev, class of 2003, was a school prefect, achieved honours for hockey and studied English Literature, History and Sport/PE Studies for A Level before commencing her degree in politics and modern history at the University of Manchester. After graduating she went on to work in higher education and then at a national trade union, leading on social care. Bev was first elected as a councillor on Manchester City Council in 2011 and was executive member for adult social care and health throughout the Covid-19 global pandemic before becoming deputy council leader in 2021. She took over as the first female leader of the council in December 2021 when Sir Richard Leese stood down after 25 years in the role and was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire in the New Year Honours List in 2025 for services to local government.
