For over 170 years Belfast High School has remained true to the ideals of its visionary founders who, in 1854, established an institution with an ethos grounded in equality, enterprise and excellence. We are proud of our heritage and of the warm atmosphere that makes Belfast High School such a special place for our pupils to learn, grow and belong. As a school family we strive to maintain the values of excellence, community and opportunity whilst constantly adapting the methods we use to maximise our effectiveness in a rapidly changing world.

Outstanding teaching is central to our success as a leading grammar school in Northern Ireland. Our teachers are united in their commitment to making their classrooms supportive academic environments where every pupil is heard, seen and valued. We are determined to see individuals fulfilling their potential. For some, this will be through challenges to extend particular gifts and talents; for others, it will be through individually tailored support. This approach, coupled with the commitment, determination and enthusiasm of our pupils, has confirmed Belfast High School’s reputation as a centre of academic excellence.

At the heart of the education that we provide is a belief in the centrality of pupils’ development. We believe in the uniqueness of each and every pupil and convey to them through our daily interactions that we believe them to be capable of fulfilling their own potential. Our goal is to see each pupil flourish academically, emotionally and socially. We want our pupils to be confident, happy and resilient and our task as educators is to equip them to be able, ethical and resourceful citizens.

A memorable school life will also feature many moments beyond the classroom. Through a rich programme of co-curricular and extra-curricular activities, challenging and inspiring educational visits and a multiplicity of leadership opportunities, our pupils are able to develop holistically, becoming the best version of themselves. We believe that our co and extra-curricular provision is outstanding, providing opportunities for creative, emotional, physical and spiritual development.

I hope this website provides visitors with colourful snapshots of a vibrant school. I invite you to browse it and to contact the School if you would like to learn more. I am also confident that our pupils, both present and past, have wonderful memories to share of Belfast High School life. They are our reason for existing and our finest ambassadors.
