MUSIC

The aim of the Music Department is to provide a comprehensive musical education, fostering musical skills, knowledge and appreciation. 

 

This involves cultivating an understanding of musical theory, history and performance techniques, while also encouraging creativity and expression through various musical activities.

CURRICULUM

Key Stage 3 

 

Pupils are taught performance, composition and aural skills through a range of topics: The Elements of Music, Instruments of the Orchestra, Carnival of the Animals and Movie Music in Year 8, Folk Music and Jazz in Year 9 and Musical Theatre, Rock Music and Baroque Music in Year 10. Pupils learn keyboard skills, ukulele and guitar at KS3, as well as how to manipulate Garageband. 

GCSE 

 

At GCSE, pupils follow the CCEA Music specification. Pupils develop two performances over the two years (one ensemble and one solo) as well as 2 compositions. They also study set works relating to the following areas: Western Classical Music, Musical Traditions in Ireland, Rock and Pop Music and Film Music. 

A Level 

 

At A Level, pupils follow the CCEA Music specification. For both the AS and A2 qualifications students create a free-choice composition and prepare a solo performance on their primary instrument. They study sacred and secular vocal music and orchestral music from 1700 to 20th Century through a range of set works and unfamiliar listening. 

Co-curricular Activities  

 

There is a huge amount of extra-curricular musical activities at Belfast High School with four different choirs available as well as instrumental groups such Orchestra, Wind Band, Folk Group and smaller wind and string groups. The Music Department is involved in the school musical production and we have had concerts at the Ulster Hall and the Assembly Buildings in Belfast.
