CURRICULUM

Key Stage 3

At Key Stage 3, a range of strategies are used to help pupils learn about biological processes and the steps involved in scientific investigation. Pupils develop their ability to challenge their current thinking in order to build new understanding. Topics covered include Cells and Microscopes, the Life of Plants, Food and Nutrition, Body Systems and Genetics.

GCSE

At GCSE, pupils follow the CCEA Biology specification. In Year 11, pupils study Cells, Photosynthesis, Enzymes, Respiratory and Nervous Systems and Ecology. In Year 12, pupils learn about Osmosis, the Circulatory System, Health and Disease, Reproduction and Genetics. Practical skills are developed across both years and tested in external examinations in Year 12.

A Level

At A Level, pupils follow the CCEA Biology specification. Pupils study Biochemistry, Body Systems, Biodiversity, Populations, Genetics, Statistics. Their practical, communication, mathematical and analytical skills are developed and an emphasis on independent study helps prepare them for university, further study or the workplace.

Co-curricular Activities

Pupils have opportunities to develop their fieldwork skills on the Loughshore or in Tollymore Forest in Year 13 and the department offers the British Biology Olympiad to Year 13 and 14 pupils. Year 12 pupils can get involved with Shared Education for Positive Innovation (SEPI) and Year 13 pupils run a Year 8 Biology Club. We regularly arrange trips to Queen’s University and encourage pupils to apply for experiences offered by Ulster University.
