HISTORY

Crest high resolution-1_edited.png

We are a co-educational voluntary grammar school in Jordanstown, Newtownabbey. The School was established by John Pyper in 1854 and was known as the Pyper Academy before changing its name to Belfast Mercantile Academy. Under the School’s second Principal, James Pyper, the School took up residence in Glenravel Street in Belfast. It was during the leadership of the fourth Principal, Dr Harte that the School moved to its current location in Jordanstown in 1963 and changed its name to Belfast High School.

Since relocating to our current site on the Shore Road, the School buildings have significantly expanded including the addition of the science block, the Harte building which provides accommodation for Home Economics, Technology and ICT, and a new sports and fitness facility.

The School has four houses as part of the house system: Boyd (green), Pyper (blue), Storey (red), Watson (yellow). Each pupil is allocated to a house for their time in School which allows them to mix with pupils throughout the School and create long-lasting connections and identity within the School family.
