A / S & A Level

AQA GCE Design & Technology – Systems & Control Technology

AS and A2 study is grouped under 3 headings:

Materials and components

The study of a variety of materials, components and systems resulting in an understanding of working characteristics, properties, cost and availability and how these influence choices in design situations.

Design and market influences

This area includes the study of the basic elements of design and how these can be effectively applied within the area of systems and control technology.    In addition, pupils are given an awareness of industrial and commercial practices within design.

Processes and manufacture

This area develops a broad knowledge of the manufacturing methods available for the production of components, systems and products.

Assessment:

AS:

Unit 1:  Written paper 1.5 hours            30% of AS (15% of A2)
Unit 2:  Coursework  -  Project 40% of AS (20% of A2)
Unit 3:  Design paper  1.5 hours            30% of AS (15% of A2)

From September 2009, pupils will study CCEA GCE Technology and Design: Systems and Control.

AS Unit 1:      Section A:  Product Design and Practice
Section B:  Electronic and Microelectronic Control Systems
This unit is assessed by a 2 hour examination and is worth 50% of the AS level and 25% of the A2 level.

AS Unit 2:      Coursework: Product Development
In this unit you will investigate and analyse an existing product, re-design, manufacture, test and evaluate the product. You will produce a 3 dimensional model or proto type which represents the practical outcome of the product analysis and development. You will also produce a folio (maximum 10 A3 pages) containing both written and graphical information.
This coursework is carried out over a period of 45 hours and counts towards 50% of the AS level and 25% of the A2 level.

A2 Unit 1:      Systems and Control: Electronic and Microelectronic Control Systems
This unit is assessed by a 2 hour examination and is worth 25% of the A2 level.

A2 Unit 2:      Coursework: Product – System, Design and Manufacture
In this unit you will manufacture a technological product or system which provides a solution to an identified problem or need. You will also produce a folio (maximum 20 pages) containing both written and graphical information.
This coursework is carried out over a period of 60 hours and is worth 25% of the A2 level.
