Clara Chivers - Head Girl

My name is Clara Chivers and I feel incredibly privileged to be appointed Head Girl of Belfast High School for the academic year of 2011/2012. In the past six years the school has provided me with a wealth of opportunities and this year will be great chance for me to give back to the life of the school, as I owe it so much. I am part of an amazing year group. The school’s dedicated and encouraging teaching staff  have had a positive influence in my academic progress as well as in interests outside the classroom.

I play first flute in the orchestra and wind band and achieved my Grade 8 last year. My flute tutor and the music teachers have always been encouraging. Playing in school events has given me great confidence which is transferable to many aspects of my life.

A highlight was the Wind Band Tour in 2009 to Berlin. I’m a member of the senior choir and I am currently rehearsing a singing part in our upcoming musical production of ‘Bugsy Malone.’ I am proud to receive full honours for Music this year and I am so grateful to the department.

Encouraged by my English teacher, I won the Newtownabbey heat of the Young Soroptomists Public Speaking Competition 2009 and represented my borough at the Northern Ireland Final. The confidence gained in myself and in expressing my ideas was immeasurable.

Last year in Sentinus Team R+D I led a great team.  Carrying out an exciting  and innovative science project for which we attained top marks. Other clubs and societies include Community Services, Girls Cricket Club, The House Prefect system and Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award. The opportunities have been endless!

I hope to use the position of Head Girl to represent the school as a fantastic choice for prospective pupils and also be a positive role model for younger students. I’d like to sincerely thank everyone who has been involved in making my school life an unforgettable and incredible experience. I have benefited from the school in countless ways and when people ask me what school I attended I will be proud to tell them “Belfast High School.”

Daniel Cavey - Head Boy

My name is Daniel Cavey and I feel very fortunate and privileged to be selected as head boy of Belfast High School for the 2011-2012 academic year.
Since I joined Belfast High School from Greenisland Primary School in 2005, I  have always admired and looked up to previous head boys and head girls and it is therefore a great honour to me that I have been selected for the role. I believe I can add to the friendly environment that it is central to the schools identity and that makes Belfast High School an ideal institution for young people to be educated.
I will strive to assist the teaching staff of the school who have been such a positive influence on me not only from an academic perspective but from a pastoral care point of view.
During my time at the school, I have taken part in a number of the societies, clubs and school trips. I have been a member of the school basketball team for the previous 3 years and last year I played for the sixth form football team, both of which I plan to continue this year. I completed my bronze and silver Duke of Edinburgh award at the school and aim to complete my gold award this year. In lower sixth I participated in a Sentinus R+D project which involved looking into how water can be purified using UV rays from the sun and achieved the CREST gold award through this. A particular highlight of my Belfast High School career was a week long trip to an activity centre in Ardeche, France.

I take great pride in being a student of Belfast High School and I am grateful to the school for the education I have received and how the school has matured me into a young adult. I am excited about the upcoming year and the role of responsibility that has been bestowed on me. I would encourage young pupils who have recently joined the school to take full advantage of all the opportunities that the school has to offer and I hope they will enjoy their experience at the school as much as I have.
