EMACT Classical Greek Course

Pupils who successfully completed the East Midlands Association of Classics Teachers Level I Classical Greek course last June have received their certificates.

This course gives pupils a brief introduction to the Classical Greek language, to Greek numbers, and to some history of ancient Athens.

Also, for the first time, several other departments joined in with the Classics department to deliver the course:  the Science department showed how the terms and processes used in science have Greek names; the English department discussed the Greek origin of many terms used in the study of English literature, and the maths department taught Greek numbers.  Apparently some pupils were disappointed that there weren’t more questions on Greek numbers on the certificate test.  Mrs. Barkley also contributed by showing the importance of the Greeks to the New Testament, and Miss Cochrane was very interested to discover how many Spanish words have a Greek origin.

Next June, technology plans to join the teaching of this course, by studying some early Greek inventions and their technology.

There are three levels of certificate:  distinction, merit, and pass.

Thirteen pupils achieved a distinction, as they scored 63% or above out of 70.  Matthew Kingston came first, Emma Clarke 2nd, and Jill McManus 3rd.  Others who achieved a distinction, in order, were Rebecca Edgeworth, Rebecca Lucas, Owen Heaney, Johnston Crothers, Kayleigh Earle, Rory Adair, Katherine Black, Chloe Carlin, Katie Keers, Judith Bell and Shannon Boyce.
