Key Stage 3

The work in Years 8 to 10 is important, as it lays the foundation for not only further studies but also for productive cross-curricular use of IT.

The purpose is to

 

Give all pupils basic skills in the use of the computer so that it may be used productively and with confidence in a wide variety of situations, both at home and at school.

 

Encourage a positive attitude to problem solving and decision making, using IT resources.

 

Foster enjoyment in the use of the computer.

 

Provide a foundation for competent use of the computer in project work.

 

Provide pupils with an understanding of how computers work and how they are used in business and everyday life.

 

On completion of Form 3 pupils should be able to

 

use with confidence word processing, database, spreadsheet, graphics, desk top publishing and communications software

 

solve a range of problems using IT resources

 

choose software appropriate for a given task

 

identify the main parts of a computer system and understand the purpose of each

 

use hardware with confidence and organise work effectively in storage

 

relate and apply their experience of IT outside school to work in the IT class and vice versa

 

demonstrate a knowledge of the terms and abbreviations used in IT
