Home Economics help to develop life skills. All pupils in Form One and Form 2 study Key Stage 3 and may continue to select the subject in Form 3.
Pupils have opportunities to learn about Healthy Eating, Home and Family Life and Independent Living. They can develop practical skills in the safe, hygienic, healthy and creative use of food.
Pupils in Key Stage 3 are also provided with the opportunity to apply their food knowledge and cooking skills in the Active Kids Get Cooking Award Scheme.
Form 3 pupils study the Level 2 Award in Food Safety in Catering. On completion of the course they are entered for the CIEH examination.
Also in Form 3 we have participated in very successful visits to the Tayto factory at Tandragee. These allowed pupils to observe and appreciate the technologies involved in the manufacture of food products on a mass scale, and to be aware of the diversity of professional careers available in manufacturing, and in particular in the food industry.
GCSE Home Economics focuses on Nutrition and Health within the context of home and family. Students develop an understanding of nutritional advice, the nutritional needs of family members throughout their lives and of diet-related conditions such as Coronary Heart Disease and Cancers. Students learn how to make informed choices, they develop competent practical skills and know how to manage resources. This leads to a progression to study GCE Home Economics.
GCSE Home Economics has two assessment components. One Terminal Examination – 50% and one internally Assessed Assignment (Coursework) – 50%.
GCSE Home Economics: Child Development involves students in the study of the physical, intellectual, social and emotional development of young children from conception up to the age of five years. It encourages knowledge and understanding of pregnancy, the needs of young children, the roles and responsibilities of parents and the social and environmental influences which affect family life. Students are encouraged to think critically, make informed choices and manage resources.
GCSE Home Economics: Child Development scheme of assessment consists of one Terminal Examination – 60% and one Internally Assessed Assignment (Coursework) – 40%.
For a number of years now we have enjoyed a visit to the BBC Summer Good Food Show in Birmingham. This has given students the opportunity to see celebrity chefs in action, and discover and sample regional and seasonal produce.
