Friends of Belfast High School
Since our formation in 1987, we have raised tens of thousands of pounds for the school. This money has helped to provide extra equipment for the school, e.g. minibus, computers, stage equipment, a plasma screen (see recent uses below).
Each year there are various fund raising events. After our AGM in September/October, we meet every couple of months or as required to arrange events and are always keen to hear about new ways to raise funds.
Like most Parent/Staff associations, we have a two-fold mission:–
-
to raise badly needed funds for the school and
-
to encourage parents and friends to enjoy themselves at the same time
It can be hard work, but it can also be good fun - it very much depends on how much effort you’re prepared to put in. We in the Friends are very proud of “our” school and we get an opportunity to show that during the year at the School Open Nights (usually during January).
Recent Uses of our Funds
Over the past few years (i.e. since about 2006) we have supported the School’s bid for Specialist (Language) Status (awarded by the Department of Education in May 2007) by committing a substantial sum (£8000) to the School’s bid. Last year (2008/2009), however, we contributed more directly to the School’s resources, by providing the funds to procure and install a plasma screen for the front reception area (for intra-school communication), as well as part funding the production of a promotional DVD for the school, and also buying some sports equipment (table tennis tables – mostly for the lower school, and livery for the School’s equestrian team.)
Events planned for this year (2009/10) include(d):
Committee Dinner (with a quiz thrown in for good measure)
Thursday 5th November 2009 – cost £20
Venue: The Windrose Restaurant, Carrickfergus
Table Quiz
Tuesday 9th February 2010 - cost £2.50/adult & £1.50/concession

Saturday 15th April – cost £25 per ticket

Car Boot Sale

Other events that we have held in recent years are a 6 week Aerobics course, a Fashion Show, Circuit Training, Bus Trips to Dublin and Ikea Glasgow (the latter now no longer needed!), but we are always eager to hear of new fundraising ideas.
Other school events to be aware of:-
Open Nights (for prospective pupils and parents)
These are normally held in January, and are an opportunity for Friends to support/promote the school, either by providing refreshments in the 6th Form Centre, or talking to the parents of prospective pupils about their experiences with the school.
Please come along and support us at our events, even if you don’t feel you can take part in the organisation of them – the more the load is spread, the lighter it is for everyone!
For more information please contact the Secretary of the Friends, Colin Fisher, via the school office.
