Community Service

COMMITTEE:

CHAIRPERSON: Jennifer Fisher

DEPUTY CHAIRPERSON: Laura Ellison

SECRETARY: Jordan Humphreys

TREASURERS: Jenny Brady, Nicole Johnston

PUBLICITY: Rachel Boyd, Rebecca Spence, Laura Jamison

Quite simply, the aim of Community Service is to help people. The committee uses suggestions and previous experiences to pick 10 charities- one for each month we are at school (Sept- June). We try to include current issues and crises such as the Pakistan flood appeal, however we also think that it is so important to help local Northern Irish charities. They are organisations that can really make a difference in our own school community- by giving to local charities the money we raise is actually able to help our very own families and friends. The list of the charities chosen for the year 2010-2011 and links to their websites can be found below.

Once the charities are decided, we have a group of over 100 dedicated pupils who, alongside the committee help to raise funds by running and taking part in events such as the Belfast Marathon and the Samaritan’s Purse Shoebox Appeal. Of course there is also ongoing fundraising throughout each month with badge selling, form class collections etc. With such a good team working together, we hope that we can raise a record amount and that 2010-2011 will be our best year yet.

For pupils interested in joining Community Service, or current members…
Remember the committee meet every week from 1.10pm on a Tuesday and the entire group meet once a month on a Tuesday at 1.30pm

THIS MONTH: OCTOBER-

Breast Cancer Awareness Month
For Breast Cancer Awareness Month we have had pink ribbon badges being sold daily and donations are made possible daily through our piggy bank system. Each form class has a ‘pet pig’ and they are responsible for ‘feeding it’ and ‘making it fat.’ Each month the donations from the piggy bank go to the month’s charity. We have also embraced ‘Pink Fridays,’ an idea from Breast Cancer Care UK and we sell delicious pink cupcakes every Friday of the month.
