English at Belfast High School

Introduction

At Belfast High School all pupils study English up to the age of 16, at which stage they sit G.C.S.E. English and the majority also sit G.C.S.E. English Literature. A sizeable number continue to study English Literature at 'A' Level.

In the English Department we are pleased with recent achievements in external examinations and our pass percentages have consistently been above the Northern Ireland grammar school average at G.C.S.E. and at 'A' Level.

Pupils are encouraged to read widely and to produce their own writing for the school magazine and for literary competitions. Each year junior pupils take part in a Readathon, proceeds of which go to the Sir Malcolm Sargent Cancer Fund for Children. There is a popular Junior Drama Club in school, a Book Club and a successful Public Speaking Group who were this year's all Ireland winners of the Business and Professional Women's Club Public Speaking Competition.
