Animal House

Belfast High School is one of very few schools in Northern Ireland with a purpose built facility for keeping animals, which are cared for exclusively by the pupils.  This “Animal House”, located in a separate building, can be found to the front of the main school building. Pupils attend during their lunch hour, giving up their free-time to care for and learn how to handle different animals.  Mrs Hood, a Biology teacher in the school, supervises this programme.

In an attempt to support the local area, the Biology Department adopts animals from Belfast Zoo, through continuous sponsorship.  The Animal House has proved, yet again, to be very popular with the new first formers.  Open every day at lunchtimes, with rotas for the pupils to follow in order that the animals are kept in their best condition. Second and Third Form are allowed to the visit more often as they have greater responsibilities with the animals and the ‘House’.  Animals currently kept in the “Animal House” include a rabbit, guinea pigs, gerbils and a bearded dragon lizard.
